Have no fear, Space Ranger!
Written by Isaac Asimov under the guise of Paul French, the Lucky Starr series is a must read for all fans of sci-fi, new or veteran.
So, what makes this series so good? Well, it's hard to say exactly. Anyone who's read Asimov knows his writing style. It has a sort of magic to it, one that pulls you in and transports you to another world. It's deep and intense, thoughtful and intelligent, light and airy all at the same time. It's quick and easy to read, fun and whimsical, thought provoking and thrilling, and amazingly well developed in all aspects. He based his ideas off of scientific knowledge of the period, and manages to slide the science in there without bogging down the story with confusing terms or boring descriptions.
Another great Asimov trait is his characters. Well developed, interesting, and lovable, you'll find yourself rooting for them in no time, laughing along with them and crying too.
I have to say, David Starr is one of the most simultaneously wonderful and infuriating characters. You cant help but adore his charisma, kindness, and sass, but his recklessness, stubbornness, and just thick headedness at times can make you want to slap him. Many of the characters feel the same way. He leaves his poor uncles constantly worrying about him, despite the fact that they know he can take care of himself. But the boy tends to think he's invincible, and that tends to bite him in the butt.
So what exactly are these books about, though? Well, they're about this young member of the Council of Science who sets off on adventures throughout the solar system to solve mysteries and save the world. Or the universe. And he does so with the help of his trusty sidekick Bigman, who is actually quite little, and the support of his uncles who are higher ups within the Council.
Full of whimsy, mystery, and a whole lot of odd futuristic technologies, these books are charming, quick reads that will have you picking up one after another, shoving them down like Oreos.
Don't worry, there are 6 of them, so you'll have plenty of Lucky and his fantastic adventures ahead of you if you decide to pick up this fantastic series.
Peace, love, and cream puffs~
